Texas is situated in the South Central region of the United States. Covering an expansive 268,596 square miles (695,660 km2) and home to over 30 million residents as of 2023, it ranks as the second-largest state in the U.S. both in terms of land area (following Alaska) and population (after California). Texas shares its borders with Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south and southwest. Additionally, it boasts a coastline along the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast. The city of Houston takes the title of the most populous city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the entire country. San Antonio follows closely as the second most populous city in the state and ranks seventh-largest nationwide. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth- and fifth-largest metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S., respectively. Other major cities within Texas include Austin, the second most populous state capital in the U.S., and El Paso. Texas earned the moniker “Lone Star State” as a nod to its history as an independent republic and its struggle for independence from Mexico. The Lone Star emblem is featured on both the Texas state flag and the state seal. The origin of the state’s name can be traced to the Caddo word “táyshaʼ,” which means ‘friends’. Thanks to its vast size and diverse geological features, such as the Balcones Fault, Texas encompasses a range of landscapes that are typical of both the Southern and Southwestern regions of the U.S. While Texas is often associated with Southwestern deserts, these arid areas make up less than ten percent of the state’s total land area. Most of the population centers are located in regions that were once prairies, grasslands, forests, or along the coastline. Traveling from east to west, the terrain transitions from coastal swamps and piney woods to rolling plains, rugged hills, and eventually to the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. The phrase “six flags over Texas” colloquially references the nations that have historically ruled over the territory. Spain was the first European country to lay claim to and control the area of Texas. After a brief period of French colonial rule, Mexico took control of the territory until Texas gained its independence in 1836, establishing itself as the Republic of Texas. In 1845, Texas joined the United States as the 28th state, a move that triggered the Mexican–American War in 1846. Following the United States’ victory, Texas remained a slave state until it declared secession from the Union in early 1861, officially joining the Confederate States of America on March 2. Following the Civil War and the reinstatement of its representation in the federal government, Texas entered a prolonged period of economic stagnation. Historically, four major industries played a significant role in shaping the Texas economy before World War II: cattle and bison ranching, cotton farming, timber production, and oil extraction. The cattle industry, which Texas eventually dominated, was a primary economic driver both before and after the Civil War, giving rise to the iconic image of the Texas cowboy. In the late 19th century, cotton and lumber also became major industries as the profitability of the cattle industry diminished. The discovery of substantial petroleum reserves, particularly at Spindletop, marked the beginning of an economic boom that fueled Texas’ economy for much of the 20th century. Over time, Texas developed a diversified economy, including a thriving high-tech industry during the mid-20th century. As of 2022, it boasts the highest number of Fortune 500 company headquarters (53) in the United States. Texas leads in various industries, including tourism, agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It has held the top position in state export revenue since 2002 and ranks second in terms of gross state product. If Texas were an independent nation, it would have the world’s 10th-largest economy.
